Suicide Intervention for 9-1-1 Professionals

Class Description:

• Suicide is the 8th cause of death in the United States.
• There are over 35,000 reported suicides yearly in the United States.
• For every 1 completed suicide, there are 50 others that call 911 or suicide prevention in an attempt to cry out for help before or during an attempted suicide.
• In most POST approved dispatch academies, suicide is discussed for less than thirty minutes.
• When asked about training needs, dispatchers feel that continued professional training regarding suicidal callers is "greatly needed".

As emergency communicators, we are the most recognized caregivers. In most parts of the nation, callers often dial 911 for help. Are we prepared for the challenge? What do we need to say to suicidal callers? How do we prepare the first responders with a picture of what they are responding to? How do we transition between being caregivers, information gatherers and tactical response dispatchers in suicidal caller events? What are the tools we need to cope with the emotional side of suicidal situations?

Topics include:

• Examining beliefs about suicide
• Myths and facts of suicide
• Developing better communications skills
• Suicide risk assessment.

Class participation is encouraged through role playing and scenario calls. Though not mandatory, each student will have the opportunity to role play with a suicidal caller based on a variety of suicidal situations.

Target Audience: Any dispatcher, call taker, trainer, or supervisor. Class is limited to 24 students for maximum benefit.

Class length: 7-8 hours

Certification: California POST Plan IV. Call for details regarding other certifications.
